Evolution Korea
Korean scientists aren't taking any risks when it comes to the debate over evolution. The Society for Textbook Revise (STR) has been battling to have Archaeopteryx and horses taken out of textbooks, saying they are common symbols of evolutionism.
Confucian practices with their emphasis on the world's success and the importance of education, continue to dominate the country's culture. But Korea is searching for an alternative model of development.
Origins
The development of Iron Age culture brought more sophisticated states like Goguryeo Baekje and Silla to the Korean peninsula. They all created a distinct style of culture that merged with influences of their powerful neighbors. They also adopted aspects of Chinese culture such as Confucianism, Buddhism and shamanism.
Goguryeo was the first of these kingdoms to establish its own system of government on the Korean people. It instituted a king-centered system of government in the 2nd century. Through a series wars it eliminated the factions that were loyal to the Han dynasty from the north of the peninsula. It also expanded its territory in Manchuria too.
It was during this period that a regional confederation emerged called Buyeo. Its founder Wang Geon was given the title of king and his name was recorded down in the 13th century Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms). Buyeo was renamed Goryeo and hence the name Korea. Goryeo had a strong commercial economy, and was a centre for education. They raised goats, sheep as well as other livestock, and made furs from them. They performed masked dance dramas such as tallori and sandaenori. They also held an annual festival in December. It was called Yeonggo.
The economy of Goryeo was boosted by rapid trade, including with the Song Dynasty of China. Byeongnando was the gateway to Gaeseong, the capital of Gaeseong. Traders came from Central Asia, Arabia and Southeast Asia. Silk and medicinal herbs were among the items they brought.
Around 8,000 BCE the Koreans began establishing permanent settlements and cultivating cereal crops. They also invented pottery and polished stone tools, and began forming clan societies. The Neolithic Age lasted until the 12th century BC. At the time, Gija, a Shang dynasty prince from China is believed to have introduced high culture to Korea. Until the 20th century many Koreans believed that Dangun and Gija gave Korea its people and their basic culture as well as their culture.
Functions
Korea's previous model of development, which was based on state-led capital accumulation, government intervention in industry and business, contributed to a rapid economic growth, catapulting it from being one of the poorest countries in the world to being among the top of OECD nations in a mere three years. One of the most significant findings is that a number of emerging trends are altering the power structure in Korea and it is these developments that will determine the direction of the country's future.
